Anti-Immigrant Group 'Invades' Long Island

The Minutemen Project, a Conservative anti-immigration group held a recruitment meeting on Saturday afternoon at the American Legion Hall in Babylon. The meeting drew a small group of 'invitees' and about 50 pro-immigrant protesters according to Long Island Newsday. The Minutemen "Civil Defense Corps" are seeking volunteers to patrol the US border with Canada.

A coalition of Long Island immigrant support groups including the Workplace Project says the Minutemen have strong links to violent white supremacist and neo-Nazi organizations. Before the meeting the coalition asked members to call the American Legion and demand the meeting be cancelled.

Earlier in the day the Minutemen staged a demonstration in Farmingville at the corner where day laborers seek work. Thirty people held signs reading "Deport Illegal Aliens" and "No Border, No Order, No Nation". Passing motorists sounded their horns in approval according to Newsday.
