Dan Steiger Tax Day Trial Tuesday June 19

The Trial Continues:

"The People' v. Dan Steiger" - East Hampton Justice Court Tuesday June 19 (jury selection) and Thursday June 21 (trial).

The court is in the East Hampton Town offices on Route 27 east of the windmill.

Dan Steiger of Sag Harbor was arrested while protesting the Iraq war on Main Street of East Hampton Village on April 15, 2006. Charges are Disorderly Conduct (2 counts) and Resisting Arrest (1 count). Mr. Steiger pleaded Not Guilty to these criminal charges and so a jury trial was in order.

Other protesters arrested the same day were charged with misdemeanors and their cases have yet to come to trial.

On Tuesday April 10 there were more people present (35) in support of the defendant Dan Steiger than there were prospective jurors (21). The attorneys for the defense (Joseph Gianinni and James Henry) and the prosecution (Assistant Suffolk DA John Halverson) rejected all potential jurors except two. Six jurors are required. At least one prospective juror said she thought that 'as long as the troops were in Iraq' it was improper to protest their being there.
Others said they had friends in the police and would believe whatever law enforcement testified to. The first group of 9 juror candidates were all opposed to the war.

The trial was re-scheduled by Justice Catherine Cahill for June 19 when the whole process starts again. If a jury is assembled on the 19th, the trial will be held Thursday June 21.

Of course this trial is not about the war. It is about our First Ammendment rights of free speech and assembly.

June 29 (Friday): Andean Flute Music in Greenport at 7pm

Flutist Walter Purizaca will be at the Floyd Memorial Library, 539 First Street in Greenport at 7 pm on Friday June 29.

The Floyd Memorial Library is proud to present an evening of haunting and beautiful music performed by an extraordinary musician who explains his passion below:

“You have probably seen us. Dark skin, long black hair, nostalgic stare and deep expression. We’re usually everywhere in the world, accompanied by our inseparable musical instruments: the winds; Quenas, Sikus or Zampoňas, Rondadores, the Antaras, pinkillos - made of cane, like bamboo: the percussion; Wankaras, Bombos, Rain Sticks, Chajchas – made of llama or sheep hooves, seeds and wool and the newer ones like charangos, mandolins, harps and guitars. We come originally from the eternal Andean region, descendants of the ancient Aymara civilization and the Inca empire.

The singularity of our music is
First: the message and kind of music that we play.
Second: the instruments on which we play it
Third: the manner in which we do it.

Andean music constitutes a very important part in our daily life, far from being a simple creation and human expression, it seems to be a kind of apprehension, interpretation and experience of a reality formed by emotions, illusions, hopes, frustrations, successes, passions, dreams, beliefs, etc. To define our music only by its sound waves or aural mark would seem too cheap. On the contrary, a ore precise conceptualization would make us define it as an energy that is produced and developed from the relationship between the human being and nature and that expands, retrieves and projects, transcending its reach in time and space inexorably and infinitely.”

Walter Purizaca
