Commentary: Shinnecock Land and Traditions

from a letter to the editor of the Southampton Press:

The Shinnecock Nation has filed suit to be compensated for their lands which were clearly taken in the 19th century in violation of US law.

As usual when the Tribe attempts to break out of
their cycle of poverty the reaction of some locals and the politicians is negative. They love our native neighbors when they withdraw from public view. When they attempt to share in the wealth created by those who took the Shinnecock Hills the racism underlying our society surfaces.

Those of us who value the traditions which the Shinnecock have preserved along with their land hope they are given the chance to prosper along with the rest of us.
