Healthcare@Marjorie's - Informational Meeting in Sag Harbor

from Marjorie Wright:

Join us at my home, 54 Palmer Terrace, on Monday, August 24th, 6-8pm where Dr. David Posnett and Arlene Coulter will help dispel rumors and misinformation concerning the Obama Administration's health care reform and give attendees ideas on direct action to help pass this important legislation. They are both expertly informed on the subject and you will benefit significantly from the evening.
Time is short to turn this momentum against a Public Option around. Pass this on to others locally who would be valuable activists.

Southampton Dems Press Conference

From Organizing for America Web Site (registration required):

Health Care Press Conference / Health Care Organizing Event

Please join us for a press conference on Wednesday August 19th at 10:15am in front of Congressman Tim Bishop's office at 137 Hampton Road in Southampton. We'll be presenting a petition supporting Tim and his efforts to develop real health care reform in this country. We also want to make sure that the press knows and reports the facts about the corporate-sponsored hooliganism that is taking place at town hall meetings in an attempt to sabotage and derail President Obama's proposed health care plans. It's crucial that you try to attend and bring as many other people as you can.

Time: Wednesday, August 19 from 10:15 AM - 10:45 AM
Host: Francis Zappone
Location: Tim Bishop Congressional Office (Southampton, NY) 137 Hampton Road
Southampton, NY 11968

ed. note:

This is not a Tim Bishop press conference. Mr. Bishop told visitors to his Coram office today that he would not be present.

More on the Congressman's position - which seems to be wavering - soon.

WPKM / WPKN: Free Speech Radio is Still Here

WPKN and WPKM want your feedback on our new program line-up:

Letter sent to Editor of the Southampton Press:*

The news about the probable demise of one of the several NPR radio affiliates broadcasting from eastern Long Island, "Public Radio Station Now Up For Sale", Press, August 13, may not signal the end times for news, music and information in these parts.

WPKM 88.7 FM Montauk and WPKN 89.5 FM Bridgeport are fiercely independent non-commercial radio stations run by volunteers on Long Island and in Connecticut. Our programs are available everywhere at www.wpkn.org. We offer a wide variety of music from rock and folk to classics.

Our news and public affairs programs, such as Counterpoint with Scott Harris (Mondays, 8pm) will be augmented starting August 31 by Democracy Now with Amy Goodman at 10pm weekdays. A re-working of the schedule will allow for a greater number of programmers and even more diverse offerings starting in September. Two programs produced by Native-Americans will be included.

WPKN is a station that welcomes volunteers from the East End. Programs produced here already include "Song Trails with Caroline Doctorow and Mick Hargreaves" (1st Saturday each month at 7pm) , Tidings From Hazel Kahan (moved to 2nd Wednesday at 12:30 pm ) and East End Ink, a literary review from Sag Harbor (moved to 4th Wednesday at 12:30 pm). Other programs such as Mal Dankner's "American Popular Song" and local news reports are produced by East Enders.

All this is presently put together on a $330 thousand yearly budget that must be met by listener contributions. WPKN does not accept funds from corporate or other business concerns so that the free speech we enjoy can continue. Please go to wpkn.org to make a tax deductible donation.

Also, join us at Martha Clara Vineyards, Riverhead on Sunday, August 30 from 12 to 6 for a rocking benefit concert with four of Long Island's Grateful Dead tribute bands.
