Jeff Halper: A Jewish Voice for Peace
The peace activist and Coordinator of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions was interviewed in Oakland CA at a meeting of Jewish Voice for Peace by Hazel Kahan of WPKN's East End News Team.
Halper is a U.S. born anthropologist who has taught at Ben Gurion Univ. and at the Friends World Institute at Southampton College.
Jeff Halper spoke about the impact of the Israeli occupation of Palestine on both Israelis and Palestinians and about the effect of world opinion on the prospects for a just peace.
Halper says that Israel will soon announce a plan to declare the route of the wall or separation barrier now being built as the provisional borders between Israel and Palestine. He says the "two state solution" is effectively dead and the system in place is apartheid (the South African term for separation).

The trial in the case of five anti-war protesters arrested for obstructing pedestrian traffic on April 15, 2006 in East Hampton will go to trial (finally) on Tuesday July 24 at East Hampton Town Justice Court, Rte 27 (PantigoRoad) east of the Windmill. The defendants arePaola Agudela, Ella Engel-Snow, Kathy Engel, Dan Steiger and Conor Wolfe. WPKN presents the Reverend Holly Haile Davis and the singing Thunder Bird Sisters of the Shinnecock Nation on Long Island. The program was recorded as they led the Sunday service at the First Universalist Church of Southold, New York on January 14 of this year.
Reverend Holly Haile Davis is the first Native-American woman ordained as a Presbyterian minister.
The program includes musical selections by the Thunder Bird Sisters and stories from the gospel according to some Native Americans.

Independence Day Marchers will Celebrate Free Speech in Southampton at 10am
July 4 (Wednesday)
Expect to see marchers celebrating the First Amendment to our Constitution and using their rights of free speech to oppose government policies in this parade. After the ACLU won a suit a Federal Judge ordered Southampton Village to write a procedure which would insure a fair process in applications of organizations to march. Among those who have applied are the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork, the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and East End Veterans, a group that opposes the ongoing war in Iraq.
Groups assemble south of the Southampton railroad station between 9 and 10 am. The parade is scheduled to start at 10am.

During the run-up to the recent Southampton Village Election, you printed an advertisement which contained false information about the facility in Huntington Station which was established to get day-laborers off the streets
of that locality. The advertisement alleged that recent violent crime in Huntington Station was caused by the presence of the day laborer site.
The advertisement in question was apparently designed to influence the recent election. It failed in that regard. However when lies are printed, a correction is in order.
I spoke with Ms. Dolores Thompson of the Huntington Station Enrichment Center last week. She told me that her organization established what they call a "safe site" in order to improve safety on the streets both for workers and vehicular traffic. The facility was established in 1998. It does not regulate the hiring process. It only provides a place for workers and employers to negotiate. Ms. Thompson says that her Center works with the police on other public safety issues.
She has seen the crime statistics and categorically stated that the allegations of a connection between crime in the area and the safe site are untrue.
Statitics on crime sent to a member of the Southampton Coalition for a Worklink Center by William English of the Suffolk County Police Department's Research and Development Section show no serious crime in the last several years at the location of the facility.
Newsday recently reported on two serious crimes in Huntington Station. They had absolutely nothing to do with the operation of the day laborer facility.
Perhaps the Press will send a reporter to Huntington Station to learn how one of several facilities for day-laborers operates and to survey independently the public safety situation.
Meanwhile, we have an un-safe situation here in Southampton, one that can be corrected in the fashion of Huntington Station. And we can do more than that by establishing a facility that will regulate the hiring process, stop unscrupulous contractors from taking advantage of immigrant workers and thereby help improve the wages paid here in construction and other trades.
A pledge of funding by the Hagedorn Foundation and an agreement with Catholic Charities to run the proposed facility mean that no public funds will be needed. Can we do this?
