The east end community and our country owe a debt to veterans Ed Gorman and Joe Giannini and all the members of East End Veterans and not only for the service they gave in WW II and Vietnam but also for their wisdom and their courage in speaking out now about the war in Iraq.
Their message is that the current war, like Vietnam, is not about fighting for freedom and democracy and that the best way to support our troops is to call for bringing them home now.
Last week's ceremony on the Green in East Hampton will have a sequel on Saturday March 19 in Southampton. The East Hampton memorial service with 1500 grave markers representing US soldiers who died in Iraq was organized by East End Veterans led by Mr. Gorman and Mr. Giannini and included also Ed Stateman and a young veteran of the Iraq war.
This Saturday March 19 we can join East End Vets in Southampton for a march and rally. We will assemble at Town Hall on Hampton Road at 1 pm and march carrying the grave markers, crosses, stars of David and crescent moons to Agawam Park for a rally to end the war in Iraq.

March 12 (Saturday) Memorial for War Dead - East Hampton Villge Green at 1:00pm
A memorial service starting at 1 pm will be held to honor the dead of the Iraq war. There will be speakers from various religious faiths and relatives of some Long Islanders who died. Names of the dead will be read. Veterans are encouraged to join the service.

In past years the School of the Americas issue was a necessary teaching tool to assist people in understanding the Imperial nature of our policies. With the oil driven invasion and occupation of Iraq that need is not as great since events unfolding before us each day serve that purpose.

Honor the Dead
As we approach the March 19 second anniversary of the invasion of Iraq the number of dead American GIs has climbed over 1500. (The Iraqi dead far exceed this number). Many activities are planned to commemorate the anniversary and to honor the dead.
Here at home during the next two weekends there are activities planned in East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton, Greenport, Stony Brook, New York City and Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Details of all these events are to be found in our Peace and Justice Calendar.

The Long Island Progressive Coalition and others will hold a press conference on the Southampton Town Hall steps at 12:30 pm. They oppose the Town Board plans for a big-box store at the location in Bridgehampton accross from the Bridghampton Commons. The town Board will meet at 2pm in a working session to consider the latest plans for this development. The coalition wants a broader group to be formed to evaluate the proposal.

A follow-up to the interfaith discussion last month in East Hampton will be held Saturday afternoon March 5 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm at the Parish Hall of Christ Episcopal Church in Sag Harbor. Clergy from several faiths will speak and a discussion will be held. People of all faiths and spiritual paths are welcome.
The gathering has been planned to provide a meeting place for those on the East End who seek an open and inclusive direction in public policy. Reverend Best of Montauk will facilitate the discussion. The Church is at the corner of Hampton St. (Route 114) and Union St. The meeting is at the Parish Hall which is behind the church on Union Street.

The film will be followed by Q&A session.

The shocking hate-based attempted murders of two Mexican day laborers catapult a small

Farmingvile was the winner of the Sundance special jury prize and Winner of the Best documentary at the San Diego Latino Film Festival among other awards.

March 7 (Monday) Southampton Housing Coalition Meets at Methodist Church 6:30 pm
The Southampton Housing Coalition is dedicated to promoting affordable housing within the Town of Southampton. At the last meeting on February 17 proposed legislation to augment the meager supply of 'accessory dwelling units' was explored (these are apartments in private homes). The trade-off between affordable houses and apartments was discussed. (For the price of one affordable house in Southampton, 50 rentals could be financed by the town. ) Use of Town loans to home owners and tax abatements were discussed.
Furthering the political agenda to get action on housing by Southampton Town is expected to take a coalition of citizens groups. If you would like to help with this effort the next meeting is Monday March 7, 6:30 at the United Methodist Church 160 North Main St. in Southampton.

March 12 (Saturday): 'Arlington East' Memorial for War Dead at East Hampton Town Green 1pm
For one week starting Saturday March 12 a 'cemetary' on the East Hampton Town Green comprised of over 1500 grave markers will memorialize those who have died in the present war in Iraq. A memorial service will be held with speakers from various religious faiths and relatives of some Long Islanders who died. Names of the dead will be read. Veterans are encouraged to join the service.
Note: the memorial travels to Southampton on Mar 19 (see below).

East End Vets will take the grave markers to Southampton Town Hall and give them to people to carry in a permited protest march to Agawam park where an anti-war rally will be held.

Saturday, March 19th, marks the two-year anniversary of the war in Iraq. It is always essential during times such as these that we protect the freedoms that can (and often are) lost.
For that reason, on March 19th, the two-year anniversary of the war in Iraq, the Suffolk NYCLU will be commemorating the contribution to freedom made by members of our community.
The honorees are Catherine Tambini - the Director of "Farmingville", Vic and Charlotte - Founders and Directors of the Cinema Arts Centre and David Kilmnick - the Founder and Director of Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth.
