Olive tree still
calls the sky
from dry
ground
cayenne seas
coffee so thick I can drink it
women who work together
(the way we work together)
gave me tapestry, during war
(always during war):
I placed on my daughter's wall when she was three
like a portrait laced with green and red thread
for memory

In that same ground of sacred old stories
where poem means to aim
an ageless man
skin creased gold like farmers
I knew as a child on the tractor after school
stood beside a sheet of plastic on a stick
one small table left in tact
the children ___they've been taken
he waved his arms in the bulldozed stubble air
taken, locked
up
We've been forgotten he said
Please have some tea

My new brother near what was bayou
told me
after the storm
in the shelters people fight to move their cots
closer to each other
what we know, what we have
is community
we will stay and fight for our space
fight for our space

are we far from home
are we moving towards home
are we home yet

it's always about home

let's get it out in the open
each name, unacceptable incorrect untranslatable
name of pain
unaccounted for
borderline, travesty, occupied
shanty, refugee, abandoned, genocide
it's our work to make language
it's our work to claim
it's our work to not allow forgetting
hold the letters in every alphabet in our tongues
blankets around our lungs to warm our breath

its always about home
suddenly I cling to my messy
piles of things
its always about home
who dares deny
look the other way

where the phoenix rises
this time the fire
is a flood
this time

Materials were collected at the Parrish Art Museum, the North Sea Community House, Human Resources at Sacred Hearts Church and the Hayground School in Bridgehampton. The St. Johns Episcopal Church in Southampton has donated the funds to ship the material.

Kathryn Szoka of Canio's Books and the LI Progressive Coalition's South Fork Chapter sent this note:

Seth Weingart formerly of the LI Progressive Coalition staff moved to New Orleans last April.

{ Seth helped organize the voter calling effort on the East End last year_ ed. }.

He & his fiance, Kady, safely evacuated with other family members outside the city. They have no idea if their home survived the floods.

Seth worked for ACORN, which is headquartered in New Orleans, helping the area's poor. Their offices are lost. Seth suggests sending donations to their Hurricane Relief fund for anyone interested in helping: acorn.org

ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is the nation's largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families, working together for social justice and stronger communities.

Long Island to Congress: Bring Them Home!

On Friday afternoon Long Island peace activists will visit the local offices of three U.S. representatives to call on them to reverse course and to oppose the war in Iraq.

"We ask you to recant your vote for the war. We ask you to give voice and support to bringing the troops home now. How many more have to die? "

The activists plan to read the names of the dead US Soldiers in the Iraq war who number more than 1800.

Anti-Immigrant Group 'Invades' Long Island

The Minutemen Project, a Conservative anti-immigration group held a recruitment meeting on Saturday afternoon at the American Legion Hall in Babylon. The meeting drew a small group of 'invitees' and about 50 pro-immigrant protesters according to Long Island Newsday. The Minutemen "Civil Defense Corps" are seeking volunteers to patrol the US border with Canada.

A coalition of Long Island immigrant support groups including the Workplace Project says the Minutemen have strong links to violent white supremacist and neo-Nazi organizations. Before the meeting the coalition asked members to call the American Legion and demand the meeting be cancelled.

Earlier in the day the Minutemen staged a demonstration in Farmingville at the corner where day laborers seek work. Thirty people held signs reading "Deport Illegal Aliens" and "No Border, No Order, No Nation". Passing motorists sounded their horns in approval according to Newsday.
