Commentary: Shinnecock Land and Traditions

from a letter to the editor of the Southampton Press:

The Shinnecock Nation has filed suit to be compensated for their lands which were clearly taken in the 19th century in violation of US law.

As usual when the Tribe attempts to break out of
their cycle of poverty the reaction of some locals and the politicians is negative. They love our native neighbors when they withdraw from public view. When they attempt to share in the wealth created by those who took the Shinnecock Hills the racism underlying our society surfaces.

Those of us who value the traditions which the Shinnecock have preserved along with their land hope they are given the chance to prosper along with the rest of us.

Member organizations of LION will commit to be in relationship with one another, to form core teams trained to act for justice and to create a community of people who actively participate in the democratic process.

LION is a multi-ethnic, multi-racial, interfaith affiliate of the Gamaliel Foundation. LION joins its sister Gamaliel organizations in the US and in South Africa to act strategically on issues of economic equity and equality. Gamaliel affiliates have championed such legislative reforms as treatment-instead-of-prison, affordable housing, accessible health care, living wages, and earned citizenship.
