Six years ago Rebecca Genia, Chuck Quinn and Gordell Wright of the Shinnecock Nation and Civil Rights Activist Bob Zellner were arrested by New York State Police while protesting the building of a housing development over sacred native land in the Shinnecock Hills area. Zellner was beaten by the police and severly injured during the arrest. He sued the state and won a judgement which is now being appealed by the State of New York. All four were acquitted of criminal charges but the state is now appealing the decision. The other three have also sued the state, but the state has postponed their cases until Bob's has been decided.
A benefit for legal expenses will be held at the United Methodist Church at 160 North Main St (near Jagger Lane) in Southampton Village Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Food will be served and a Chinese auction with many valuable prizes will be held.
