The Long Island Wins blog is a conversation that includes and welcomes all Long Islanders. When it comes to the topic of immigration, we've heard too much rhetoric and not enough about solutions. This blog is a place where we can have a frank and informed discussion about immigration and its impact on Long Island, and where we can discuss the ideas that will enable Long Island and its diverse communities to develop a local approach to immigration policy that will benefit all Long Islanders, support the region's dynamic economy, and truly engage with our neighbors on this important issue.
Long Island Wins blog will be a voice of cooperation where Long Islanders can voice their concerns and discuss constructive solutions to the challenges created by immigration. We will connect Long Islanders with smart policies and policymakers working to develop practical approaches to immigration in the region. We will highlight the stories of our neighbors to better understand their goals and their economic and cultural contributions to their communities.
Over the past decade, Long Island's Latino residents have contributed nearly $5.7 billion dollars in consumer spending to our local economy. These Latino Long Islanders also contribute a net benefit of $614 per resident in local taxes. Latino businesses also created 52,000 jobs throughout Long Island in the same period. We cannot have a conversation about immigration with acknowledging those facts. But we also can't have a one-sided conversation that doesn't recognize that we need practical interventions so that we can solve the problems that do indeed exist.
We hope that you will join us!
