Home At Last!

After a 2 year wait, a family on the ShinnecockReservation received a house moved from a site in Southampton Village on Monday afternoon.

As the house moved to its new location. Shinnecock elder Elizabeth Thunder Bird Haile told us

"for two years we have been working on finding a house... and what happened is that there was a house that was going to be destroyed and this house and all the facilities have been donated by community people who care about a family whose house had fallen down around them... it was only a trailer to begin with. There was no help coming from any place else and there were 3 generations in that house."

Repairing and replacing housing on the Reservation is difficult due to lack of funds. A reservation house has no market value since it can't be re-sold and common ownership of the land means mortgages cannot be obtained.

The Padoquohan Medicine Lodge works to fix up or replace sub-standard housing on the reservation.

Reverend Holly Haile Davis who is Mrs. Haile's daughter explained that

"The Padoquohan Medicine Lodge has worked for about 10 years in assisting families who are in sub-standard and unsafe housing situations. The house that we are moving today is one that was donated by a family in Southampton Village. Raising the money to have it moved to the Reservation took us 2 years. But today is the day and we are very happy about our success"

The Medicine Lodge continues to raise tax-deductable funds to complete the work on this house and to be able to make repairs on other Shinnecock homes. They can be reached at Padoquohan Medicine Lodge, P.O. Box 5078 Southampton, New York, 11969.

This report was prepared for the 6:30pm Local News on WPKN 89.5 Bridgeport and WPKM 88.7 Montauk and streaming on the web at wpkn.org.

Racism Runs Deep: Cynthia Richardson Comments

Three incidents reported this month:

In October, the Southampton Board of Education - Scarecrow Doll Causes Racial Stir (1).

Last week, a figure with a black face, wearing a hat and hanging from a noose in a resident's backyard in Southampton. (2)

Now the noose at Cablevision. (3)

Racism runs deep. It infects the hearts of both White and Black Americans. Without conscious, deliberate, and sustained effort, no one can remain unaffected by its corrosive influence. Both groups must realize that such a problem can neither easily nor immediately be resolved. Let neither think that anything short of genuine love, extreme patience, true humility, consummate tact, sound initiative, mature wisdom, and deliberate, persistent, and prayerful effort, can succeed in blotting out the stain which this patent evil has left on our country.

Blacks and Whites must understand that no real change will come about without close association, fellowship, and friendship among diverse people. Racism is the most challenging issue confronting our country and to ignore the problem is to expose all of us to physical, moral, and spiritual danger.

Diversity of color, nationality, and culture enhances the human experience for all of us.

The responsibility for the achievement of racial peace and unity rests upon all of us! I pray that "2007" will bring all of us together to work for peace!

Housing Update

November 25:

The Padoquohan Medicine Lodge,Inc., a 501 (c) (3) organization, has a tradition of giving help to women raising families on the Shinnecock Reservation. This has included renovating homes enabling them to live safely.

They need to help one such woman, now a grandmother, to have a safe and warm house for this winter. The family, three generations, have been living in un-safe conditions.

Funds are needed to move and establish a house that has been donated by local builder, Michael White. Other contributions of cash and of building supplies , labor (including the construction of a foundation and driveway) have been received. Now about half the goal has been met.

According to a letter sent by the Padoquohan Medicine Lodge:

"several tribal members who have given generously in the past, find themseles unable to contribute this year at previous levels. As you may know, there are several law suits currently being waged against the Shinnecock Tribe. These assaults on our tribe directly affect the financial well-being of our whole community."

Any help will be appreciated!

The Padoquohan Medicine Lodge's address is P.O.Box 5078, Southampton, NY 11969.

Further information can be obtained by calling 631- 283 - 8428.

As Winter Comes - A reminder

Southampton Village has tried to avoid doing anything so far about its number one problem - a throng of people standing out in the streets looking for work - people from Latin America who find it impossible to find work at home. US policy is beyond the reach of anyone here to fix.

The local Coalition for a Work Link Center and non-profit foundations together with Catholic Charities have offered to fix Southampton's immigrant labor problem at no cost to the Village.Bowing to the complaints of fearful, un-informed residents spurred on by national and local hate groups, the Village officials seem to have backed down from their promise to accept what seems like a sensible solution. Of course, finding a proper location for the Center is a problem.

Other elected officials have offered to help locate a site. We need to encourage them to continue this effort.

What we can do:

Tell our local officials that we want a safe and regulated place for people seeking work. Go to the web-site of the Coalition and sign the petition to officials- say you support the proposal for a Work Link Center similar to those in other Long Island communities such as Freeport and Glen Cove.

Join the Coalition: Help is needed in several areas. Contact Sister Margaret Smyth or Dianne Rulnick.

Yusuf's Story: radio documentary about Palestine

WPKN will present "Yusuf's Story" a radio documentary about how the occupation of Palestine impacts one man and his village.

Yusuf's Story, produced by WPKN's East End Long Island News Team and written by Hazel Kahan of Mattituck was broadcast on Thursday, November 16 at 12 Noon on WPKN 89.5 and WPKM 88.7.

The half-hour program is now available on the web at this link.

The Background:

Since 1967 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have been surrounded by expanding Israeli settlements and a network of roads built solely for the occupiers.

Now Israel is building a barrier - part concrete wall - part steel fence and roadways - in the name of security - along and within the Palestine side of the ‘green line’, its border with the West Bank.

In this map of the Bethlehem area from B'Tselem the purple line is the planned route of the wall. The Palestinian villages are shaded brown and the Israeli settlements in blue. Israeli controlled areas are light blue and white.

In the areas of the West Bank surrounding Jerusalem Israel continues to build and expand settlements.

South of Jerusalem Israeli government plans call for several Palestinian villages to be trapped between two barriers - a wall close to the green line and another wall, several miles west, blocking access to Bethlehem and the rest of the West Bank.

One of the villages in the planned path of the wall is the ancient village of Battir, a few miles west of Bethlehem. (Battir is just east of the green line near the top of the map.)

Yusuf lives in Battir and has worked for many years in nearby Aminadav in Israel.

Yusuf's story was written and is narrated by Hazel Kahan. Hazel is an activist and artist who lives in Mattituck. She travels frequently to Israel to visit family and friends around Jerusalem.

Yusuf's Story was produced by WPKN's East End of Long Island News Team.

More Info:

Information on the wall and Israeli settlements on the West Bank, including maps, can be obtained from B’Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories.

More information about Battir can be obtained on the

Born in Harlem in the early fifties, Watlington struggled with an addiction to heroin in his youth, bounced from reform school to a New England boarding school, all the while chasing the American dream; looking to find an America that lived up to its rhetoric. From Bonnie Cannon

Dear Friends,

I am proud to announce our First Annual East End Black Film Festival that will be taking place at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton on November 4th.

It is being hosted by the African American Museum and Center for Excellence - currently a virutal museum with future planned site for building. Our mission is as follows: The African American Museum and Center for Excellence is an organization serving the North and South Fork communities, with a mission to promote an understanding and appreciation of African American culture.

The museum will house artifacts of African historical distinction, acquire and maintain local African historical structures and sites in the North and South Fork area, and lastly create programs to educate the public about the importance of the rich African American historical legacy.

Please view the program details below. Light refreshments will be served including ethnic food provided by Gloria's of the Hamptons. The cost for the entire day - $5.00.

This is an historic event and you don't want to miss it. We need your support and attendance at the festival to continue to have events of this nature in the Hamptons. Again, please show your face in the place. Should you need to discuss further, feel free to contact me on (631)287-1271.

Warmest Regards, Bonnie Cannon

FILM SCHEDULE & SYNOPSIS -
Films for Saturday November 4
Parrish Art Museum, Jobs Lane Southampton

1:30pm: Children’s Selection

The Journey of Henry Box Brown (Ages: 3 – 10)
Director – Karyn Parsons
The Journey of Henry Box Brown takes a magical look at the historic true tale of slave Henry Box Brown, a man who mailed himself in a wooden box from a plantation in Richmond, Virginia to freedom in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1848. Narrated by Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated actress Alfre Woodard (Cross Creek) this animated story uses entertaining verse to share Henry's story.

2:00 pm: Family Selection

Kirikou and the Sorceress (African Folk Tale depicts some nudity)
Director – Michel Ocelot
Animated film recounts the tale of tiny Kirikou, born in an African village on which Karaba the Sorceress has placed a terrible curse. Kirikou sets out on a quest to free his village of the curse and find out the secret of why Karaba is so wicked. Kirikou depicts a precocious newborn infant who battles ignorance, and so-called evil, with endearing perseverance. This film speaks to the child within us all who years to express and defend the best in others and ourselves.

3:00 pm: Classic Selection

The Green Pastures
Director – Marc Connelly and William Keighley
"Gangway for de Lawd God Jehovah!" Despite racial stereotypes and a naive, backward vision of "Negro Heaven," The Green Pastures remains an important, controversial, and still-entertaining milestone in African American popular culture. Because this 1936 spiritual musical embraces all of the black stereotypes that were prevalent in its time, Warner Home Video has appropriately included a disclaimer regarding the political incorrectness of the film's then-common racial prejudices, stressing the importance of acknowledging these stereotypes as opposed to pretending they never existed. With this understanding, The Green Pastures still endures as a classic American folk drama, based on Marc Connelly's Pulitzer Prize-wining Broadway production in which several Old Testament stories are performed as they might be imagined by black Sunday-school child in the Depression-era South. As a relic of its time, it's a vivid (and for some, still uncomfortable) reminder that racial stereotypes--even in a joyful gospel context--can teach us a lot about where we've been, and where we've yet to go.

5:00 pm: Feature Presentations (Adult content, parental guidance for teens recommended)

The Constellation (2005)
Director/Producer – Jordan Walker-Pearlman
Constellation chronicles the lives and loves of an African-American family in the Deep South as they are forced to come to terms with a tumultuous past marked by an unrequited interracial affair. The film explores the way in which the family patriarch must confront his demons amidst the changing racial fabric of society and his own family.

When Does it Stop (short-film) – 7:00 pm

Director – Derek Koen, Producer – Ouida Washington
When Does It Stop peers into the murder of a young man, its impact on his family, and its perpetuation of the cycle of violence in the streets. The unending cycle of violence continues. The film asks the question “When Does It Stop”?

The Unseen (2005) – 7:30 pm
Director – Lisa France, Executive Producer – Luis Moro
Roy Clemons (Steve Harris of The Practice) returns to his rural hometown in Georgia (pop. 83) to face the deep-rooted racial tensions of a deep southern town that ages, but never changes. This is a spellbinding drama deep in the south, where friendship connections had been broken for over 20 years. The past comes to the present, laced with intolerance and misunderstandings and possible old wounds needing to be mended.
