A safe warm house for the winter

The Padoquohan Medicine Lodge,Inc., a 501 (c) (3) organization, has a tradition of giving help to women raising families on the Shinnecock Reservation. This has included renovating homes enabling them to live safely.

Shinnecock elder Elizabeth Thunder Bird Haile writes:

"There seem to be so few avenues of help for their basic needs.

Emergencies are often unable to be met, so they try to do without. This only leads to a worse condition. And still, they send clean children to school every day on the bus. They are strong.

We need to help one such woman, now a grandmother, to have a safe and warm house for this winter. Only $50,000 would make it possible. The land and the general contractor are in place ready to have building begin, but no funds to bring in a building. Any help will be appreciated."

Winter is coming

Winter is coming ... did you notice the hail storm Tuesday?

There are things you do to prepare for the winter.

First of all:

Most of us have a safe warm house, but not all do. Please click here!

Next:

Southampton Village has tried to avoid doing anything so far about its number one problem - a throng of people standing out in the streets looking for work - people from Latin America who find it impossible to find work at home.

US policy is beyond the reach of anyone here to fix.

But we can do one or two things:

Tell our local officials that we want a safe and regulated place for people seeking work. The local Coalition for a Work Link Center and non-profit foundations together with Catholic Charities have offered to fix Southampton's immigrant labor problem at no cost to the Village.

Bowing to the complaints of fearful, un-informed residents spurred on by national and local hate groups, the Village officials seem to have backed down from their promise to accept what seems like a sensible solution.

What we can do:

* Go to the web-site of the Coalition and sign the petition to officials- say you support the proposal for a Work Link Center similar to those in other Long Island communities such as Freeport and Glen Cove.

* Join the Coalition: Help is needed in several areas. Contact Sister Margaret Smyth or Dianne Rulnick. A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday October 31 at the office of the Apostalado Hispano at Sacred Hearts Church on Hill Street in Southampton at 12:30 pm

A Little Known Fact: US Funds the Destruction of Homes in Palestine

The Committee for Peace in Israel and Palestine presented "Rachel's Words" at the UU Meeting House in Bridgehampton this past Sunday evening. Thanks to Kathryn Levy and her cast of readers and musicians.

It was a powerful presentation about the American who was murdered by the Israeli army as she was trying to prevent another house demolition in Gaza in 2003.

Rachel was run over by a giant US made /US funded Catepillar bulldozer driven by an Israeli soldier clearing homes in the path of the barrier they built near the border with Egypt.

During the presentation which focused mainly on Rachel Corrie's writings during her short life
we learned what was referred to as 'a little known fact' : Ten thousand Palestinian homes have been bulldozed in recent years. According to the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions

"House demolitions have become the hallmark of the Occupation. Indeed, since 1967 Israel has demolished almost 12,000 Palestinian homes, leaving some 70,000 without shelter and traumatized."*

The Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza (now a virtual prison for it's residents) is funded by our US subsidies of cash and equipment for the Israeli military.

Tell our LI congressmen to get Congress to stop funding the occupation of Palestine! They may be listening in this election season.
