At Tuesday evening's Southampton Town Board meeting the Town Trustees
approved purchase of
9.3 water front acres in Water Mill for over 4 million
dollars with money from the town's Community Preservation Fund.
The
land bordered by Mecox Bay and Montauk Highway is a known site of a
Native American fishing village and contains an ancient burial ground.
A
1000 year old human skull was unearthed
at the site in 2006 during construction activities for a planned development.
The Inter-Tribal Historic Preservation Task Force, comprised of members of Long Island and New England tribes, had campaigned for the purchase of this land from the owner Gregory Konner.
